"Attack me bhi gun, defense me bhi gun....hum banayenge Mirzapur ko Amreeka."
Intense, interesting, violent, fresh and political. These are the five words which come into mind while watching Amazon Prime Video's crime-thriller web series Mirzapur — named after a city in Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The show is a fresh new take on the crime genre.
First of all, let's get to the plot(s). The story circles around different characters with different ambitions and objectives on their minds. Akhanand Tripathi aka Kaleen Bhaiyya (Pankaj Tripathi) is the main don of Mirzapur and is involved in business of carpets, guns and drugs. His son Phoolchand Tripathi aka Munna (Divyendu Sharma) wants his father to give him control of his business. Brothers Guddu Pandit (Ali Fazal) — a spirited bodybuilder — and Babloo Pandit (Vikrant Massey) — a bright student — get tangled in the criminal world due to the occurring and turbulent situation.
The actors have done justice to their respective characters. The dialogue delivery was great. Divyendu and Ali proved that stars sweet faces can play the role of a vile and ruthless villain. Pankaj Tripathi — who nailed negative roles in the past such as Surya in Agneepath — was the standout star while Kulbhushan Kharbanda is a perfect addition to the mix of villains. Throughout the later episode, the supporting roles get more air time but there were few elements which were completely forgettable. It would have made no difference if something happened or not happened with them.
It is the mystery which sets Mirzapur apart from other crime shows/flick. The unpredictable script and character development makes the audience root for their favourite characters. It can be said that the producers and writers added diversity to each character on stage so that the audience gets to know what is going on in their minds but unable to predict their next step.
As always, the show’s dark theme come with glorifying violence and evil by adding humour to the situation. There are some memorable hilarious dialogues during several intense moments. For the characters, violence has become a part of their nutrition.
Season 1 of the show has come to an end and stars have confirmed season 2. Let’s hope that the upcoming season is more intriguing than the previous. Adios !!!
